If you’re a smoker and you roll yourself, a leaf is not just a leaf. You have likely developed a technique of your own and have your own preferences.

Just like in any other industry, different brands have different flavors, textures, smells, and tastes. When you’re rolling with a fresh tobacco leaf, the leaf provides the majority of the flavor.

This means that if you’re going to take the time to roll it up right, you want to make sure that it’s going to taste the way you want it to taste.

Let’s talk a little bit about what’s in a tobacco leaf.

The veins can tell you a lot about the quality of the leaf. Shade-grown tobacco leaves have small, smooth veins if they are a higher quality shade-grown leaf. An oily texture is normal and to be expected as is an appropriate thickness. The leaf should feel healthy, not dried out or brittle.

A leaf that feels appropriately thick and oily as you are rolling will likely create a better overall smoking experience for you.

Shade-Grown and Sun-Grown tobacco leaves will have a different look and feel to them, and will impart a different feel and flavor to your smoke.

Tobacco plants that are grown out of the sun in tents are called, as you may have guessed, Shade-Grown Leaves. Their growth in the shade allows for a smoother texture and keeps the veins small and smooth.

Sun-grown leaves must be more resilient since they are grown in the heat and must develop a protection against the heat from the sun. Sun-Grown leaves are grown in direct sunlight. They produce a thicker, darker wrap and tend to have a sweeter flavor.

Connecticut Shade leaves are by far some of the smoothest leaves around. The mild flavor and small veins lead to a smooth taste and feel that is a classic favorite among smokers who choose to roll themselves.

Funnels Original Connecticut grown leaves are the smoothest there is. The rich flavor offers an experience that will keep you experimenting with different varieties of Funnels to add as a permanent part of your smoking experience.
