Spirit Airlines Updates Dress Code: Tattoos and Clothing Under New Scrutiny

Having a tattoo deemed “offensive” or wearing transparent clothing could result in being removed from an upcoming Spirit Airlines flight.

Having a tattoo deemed “offensive” or wearing transparent clothing could result in being removed from an upcoming Spirit Airlines flight.

The airline recently updated its “contract of carriage” document, which lays out the behavioral expectations for passengers. The latest changes define “inadequately clothed” as wearing transparent garments, failing to cover adequately, or exposing private areas such as breasts or buttocks. Additionally, tattoos described as “lewd, obscene, or offensive” are also addressed in the updated policy.

While the airline has included clothing restrictions in its contract of carriage for years, these guidelines previously lacked specific examples. For instance, an earlier version of the contract from January 2024 prohibited passengers from being “barefoot or inadequately clothed” or wearing attire considered “lewd, obscene, or offensive.”

Although the earlier language was similar, it left more room for subjective interpretation by airline staff. The updated rules now clarify examples of inappropriate attire but maintain a level of flexibility.

Similarly, the section on tattoos is somewhat vague, offering no clear examples of what constitutes “lewd, obscene, or offensive” body art. This leaves room for interpretation, which may require passengers to cover tattoos or wear additional clothing to comply with the rules.

While these updates add clarity in some areas, guidelines regarding passenger attire are not new and have historically sparked disputes for various airlines.
